SPIN S-100t

Mobility·2019·Lead Designer (body)

The S-100T is Spin's first in-house designed shared electric scooter. It was the flagship micro-mobility product, built to outlast the off-the-shelf scooters the industry started with.

The Brief

Spin needed to stop running on Segway/Ninebot reference hardware and ship its own purpose built scooter. The brief was to design for fleet life, not consumer life, meaning durability, serviceability, and strong visual identity.

Constraints

The body had to take the abuse of daily riding. Skids, scuffs, falls, and incliment weather had to be accounted for in the design while also optimizing for field service by ops crews.

Direction

A rugged, blocky stance with deliberate visual mass gave the scooter its rugged appearance. The orange stem became the brand signature while everything below it had to support that hero element without competing with it.

Form & Ergonomics

The form focused on a stable and rugged look, while still looking inviting enough to entice novice riders. I tested multiple 1-1 mockups and utilized VR to quickly evaluate large forms and general proportions. The stomp break was designed with an integrated handle to ease in field workers grabbing and lifting into transport vehicles.
